Tips for trans-seasonal dressing

Here in New Zealand, we’re just entering the beginning of spring, well known for its changing weather and fluctuating temperatures. With the lines between our defined seasons blurring globally and our weather becoming more and more unpredictable, it’s more important than ever to invest in a wardrobe that will see you through a variety of different seasons.

While it might take time to build up your own perfect collection of items, here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your wardrobe during those in-between seasons.

Add layers

Now the sun has started to poke its head out from underneath grey clouds, it can be tempting to dig out last year’s summer dresses from the back of the wardrobe. But anyone who’s been caught out by the chilly wind of New Zealand’s transition seasons knows, it’s way too early to go completely bare-armed!

Instead, let layers work for you by popping a lightweight top under your favourite dresses for an extra layer of warmth. Try wearing a plain white or black tee under a sleeveless dress, or opt for a cozy layer like our Merino long sleeve basics for extra comfort.

If layers aren’t for you but you can’t wait for hot weather to get back into dresses, consider investing in a few dresses with long sleeves. Long sleeve maxi dresses are a great nod to the warmer weather to come. And the best thing about long-sleeved dresses? You can roll the sleeves up once the weather gets warmer.

Add a top coat

When moving between seasons it’s important not to overlook outerwear. While the days of needing a big winter coat might be over, nothing says trans-seasonal like a mid-weight jacket! Investing in a few transitional jacket options is a great way to add extra warmth to your outfits.

A well-fitting blazer like our Cropped wool blazer is the perfect addition to any smart-casual look! Not only is wool breathable and odor-free, making it a great trans-seasonal fabric but it can help take any outfit to the next level. For a more casual look consider a denim or leather jacket for instant style, just be prepared to take it off if it gets unexpectedly warm.

It’s all about the shoes

Now we have the perfect outfit, its time to top it off with our favourite accessory - shoes! Ankle boots or sneakers are great options for temperate days or when you’re expecting rain. You can choose to wear either heavier or more lightweight socks underneath to temper the heat.

If you’re more covered on top and think you might overheat consider an open toe shoe to help keep things breathable. Open-toed heels will complement any dressy outfit, while something like a mule is a great option for more casual days.

No matter the weather outside, dressing for the season takes a little bit of planning and creativity. As you continue to build your own perfect wardrobe consider which pieces you can invest in to make sure you have options to mix any match from year-round!
